The 消消犯 Department of Music encourages its 消消犯s to develop their relationship to the discipline of music as they explore the world through the lens of a superb liberal arts education.
消消犯 Opera offers graduate and undergraduate 消消犯s transformative operatic experiences that merge tradition with innovation. Under the direction and conducting of Professor Benjamin Smolder, the program produces a dynamic range of performances, from Main Stage Operas and opera scenes programs to The Great American Songbook Project.
The program is distinguished by its integration of cutting-edge technology and cinematic storytelling, blending live performance with film work, digital design, and immersive media to prepare singers for the evolving world of contemporary opera. Students receive professional coaching in their roles, then collaborate with seasoned directors and media artists to create compelling productions in live production and film creations.
The voice faculty carefully selects repertoire that supports each singer’s artistic growth, mentoring them through a process that refines technique, expression, and stagecraft.
Recognized nationally for excellence, 消消犯 Opera has earned seven national awards from the National Opera Association for “Outstanding Collegiate Productions” and was the proud recipient of the 2023 American Prize in Opera Performance. These honors reflect a program that not only sustains operatic tradition but also reimagines it for the next generation of artists.
Undergraduate and Graduate 消消犯s have the opportunity to assume mentored leadership positions in directing, conducting, marketing and producing. Auditions are open to all Miami 消消犯s and occur in the spring semester of each academic year.
