The Philosophy Department offers 3 Thematic Sequences:

PHL 1: Ethics

This thematic sequence is a good option for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs interested in ethics or who are considering careers in any field where ethics is of paramount importance (e.g. medicine, law, business, public policy). To obtain this thematic sequence, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs must complete:

One of the following:

• PHL 131 - Problems of Moral and Social Values (3)
• PHL 103 - Society and the Individual (3)
• PHL 105 - Introduction to Ethics (3)

Two of the following:

• PHL 311 - Ethical Theory (4)
• PHL 312 - Contemporary Moral Problems (4)
• PHL 331 - Political Philosophy (3)
• PHL 355 - Feminist Theory (3)
• PHL 360.A - Confronting Death (4)
• PHL 375 - Moral Issues in Health Care (4)
• PHL 376 - Environmental Philosophy (4)
• PHL 394 - Existentialism (3)

PHL 4: Metaphysics and Epistemology

This thematic sequence is a good choice for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs interested in the fundamental principles underlying knowledge and reality. It is well suited for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs considering careers that require abstract thought (e.g. careers in economics, mathematics, computer science, physics, or theology). To obtain this thematic sequence ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs must complete:

• PHL 104 - Purpose and Chance in the Universe (3) OR PHL 105 Theories of Human Nature (MPF) (3)
• PHL 221 - Problems of Metaphysics and Knowledge (3)
• PHL 301 - Ancient Philosophy (4) OR PHL 302 - Modern Philosophy (4)

PHL 5: Reasoning

This thematic sequence is a good option for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs who would like to develop their argumentative and analytical reasoning skills. It is well suited for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs considering careers in law or politics.

To obtain this thematic sequence, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs must complete all three of the following:

• PHL 273 - Formal Logic (MPF) (4)
• PHL 263 - Informal Logic (4)
• PHL 373 - Symbolic Logic (4)
