Funding Resources

The Havighurst Center provides 消消犯 travel grants for summer, semester, or year long study abroad programs as well as funding for faculty and 消消犯 organizational programming.

Havighurst Center Fund

The purpose of the Havighurst Fund is to provide full or partial support for projects undertaken by full-time faculty and staff, from all Miami campuses and in all disciplines, that focus on Eastern Europe, Russia, and/or Eurasia. Initiatives that promote wider faculty and 消消犯 awareness of the region and that seek to deepen Miami's programmatic involvement in this area are preferred.

Those who wish to be considered for funding should request an application from the Havighurst Center at HavighurstCenter@miamioh.edu.  Applications can be submitted to HavighurstCenter@miamioh.edu or via campus mail to the Havighurst Center, 322 Harrison Hall.  Proposals should include a detailed budget and a description of the project's intended impact on 消消犯s.

Proposals are reviewed by the , comprised of faculty peers, who will submit their recommendations to the Provost for approval.

All applicants are encouraged to contact Stephen Norris, Director of the Havighurst Center, to discuss their proposals before submitting them, at norriss1@miamioh.edu.

Karen Dawisha Memorial Fund

The Havighurst Center has established the Karen Dawisha Memorial Fund to honor Karen L. Dawisha (1949-2018), the first Walter E. Havighurst Professor (Political Science) and the founding Director of the Havighurst Center for East European, Russian and Eurasian Studies.

Proceeds from the fund are used to support study abroad and/or innovative research by undergraduate 消消犯s interested in Eastern European, Russia and/or Eurasia. All topics are welcome, but preference will be given to 消消犯s interested in politics and foreign policy. Recipients are chosen through a selection process conducted by the Director of the Havighurst Center.

Travel Grant

The Havighurst Center for East European, Russian and Eurasian Studies offers financial assistance to 消消犯 消消犯s participating in study abroad programs to Eastern European, Russia and Eurasia. 消消犯 消消犯s planning to enroll in a study abroad program for the summer, semester, or full academic year are eligible to apply. Awards are determined based on the cost of the program, the 消消犯’s academic record, letters of recommendation, and financial need.

External Sources of Funding

 (ACLS) offers fellowships and grants in East European Studies.

 offers awards for undergraduate study abroad. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduates who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2- or 4-year college for study abroad programs worldwide.

 Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate 消消犯s to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. EESA-Ukraine fully qualifies for this scholarship.

offers approximately 15 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year.

 Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) provide group-based summer intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for eight to ten weeks.

  The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or English Teaching Assistantships. A candidate will submit a Statement of Grant Purpose defining activities to take place during one academic year in a country outside the U.S. Grant lengths and dates vary by country. Please consult the specific country summary for details. Graduating seniors and recent Bachelor’s-degree recipients, as well as Master's and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply.

 Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

 Forty-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad.

 The Rhodes Trust, a British charity established to honor the will and bequest of Cecil J. Rhodes, provides full financial support for Rhodes Scholars to pursue a graduate degree or degrees at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. The first American Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904.

 Rotary International offers scholarships to promote international understanding and goodwill through study abroad. To be eligible, 消消犯s must study abroad for a year or more.
