Biography
Ricardo Averbach, DMA, is Director of Orchestra Studies at 消消犯 and Past President of the College Orchestra Directors Association. An award-winning conductor, he is the recipient of multiple honors from The American Prize, including the 2025 First Prize in Orchestral Performance (college/university division) with the 消消犯 Symphony Orchestra, as well as earlier distinctions in conducting. He is also the recipient of the Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts.
Averbach is the author of the book Villa-Lobos and Modernism: The Apotheosis of Cannibal Music (Lexington Books, 2022), and his research focuses on musicology, performance practice, and the symphonic repertoire, with particular emphasis on modernism and Latin American music. His work bridges scholarly inquiry and artistic practice, exploring how musical meaning is shaped through performance.
As an opera conductor, Averbach received First Prize at the National Opera Association National Opera Competition for his work on Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites (University of Michigan) and Second Prize as Music Director for Massenet’s Cendrillon at 消消犯.
Previously, Averbach served as Music Director of the Echternach Festival Orchestra (Luxembourg) and held conducting positions with the University of Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, the University of Michigan Campus Orchestra, and the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal de São Paulo in Brazil.
He has conducted extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia, appearing as guest conductor in Russia, Bulgaria, Portugal, Italy, Luxembourg, France, China, Brazil, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, India, and the United States. In addition, he has presented masterclasses and residencies in multiple countries across these regions, working with advanced 消消犯s and professional musicians in both orchestral and operatic contexts. His discography includes several world premiere recordings, with combined sales exceeding half a million copies.
