Miami’s McVey Data Science building innovates for the future

New space inspires cutting-edge programs, collaborations

Innovation and collaboration are housed within the McVey Data Science building.

The new academic building is home to the Departments of Emerging Technology in Business + Design (ETBD); Statistics; and Computer Science and Software Engineering, along with the Center for Analytics and Data Science (CADS).

Designed to foster transdisciplinary research, McVey Data Science has four classrooms, 12 conference and seminar rooms, and 88 offices to support academic instruction, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ activities, and informal collaboration.

It also houses the Armstrong Institute for Emerging Technology and the Lilly Leadership Institute. McVey Data Science opened for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs at the beginning of spring semester 2023-2024.

Since the building opened, degree programs associated with data have grown by nearly 50 percent.

The facility is built around collaboration and interdisciplinary engagement, providing spaces where diverse disciplines can converge and share insights on data and analytics.

McVey is equipped with advanced laboratories for robotics, cybersecurity, and extended reality, making it a central location for innovation at Miami.

“I walk past these spaces and ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs are always there with their books and computers open, talking with their peers and working on problems and projects,” said Bob Davis, Chair of Statistics. “I think the way the building is set up with all the collaborative spaces makes it a perfect place for our ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈs to help each other learn.”

The building is named for alumnus Rick McVey ’81, who is at the forefront of the financial technology industry. As founder and executive chairman of MarketAxess, McVey helms a leading electronic trading platform for global bond markets.

A former ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ-athlete who later served on Miami’s Foundation Board, McVey also is a passionate supporter of the university as it advances the field of data science.

“I am energized by the collaborations across the various colleges and departments and the way that ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈ projects cross multiple disciplines and touch many industry areas,” said Elizabeth Mullenix, Miami’s provost.
